About Hospitals of Hope

Statement of Need

Hospitals of Hope gives you the opportunity to volunteer in short term missions tripsHospitals of Hope is a Wichita, Kansas-based, internationally-oriented medical mission organization.  Founded in 1998 by ten Wichita community members devoted to changing the odds of those living without accesible healthcare, Hospitals of Hope originally focused on the country of Bolivia, but, as the years have passed, we have developed a more global approach to needs that are truly global.

We began our work in Bolivia because Bolivia is the poorest country in South America with 58% of the population living in poverty.  This endemic poverty has led to the second highest infant & maternal mortality rate in the western hemisphere.

Hospitals of Hope originally operated out of a fourteen-room medical/dental clinic in Bolivia, but now runs a thirteen thousand square foot hospital complex on the outskirts of Cochabamba, Bolivia.

Hospitals of Hope Bolivian Medical Complex outside Cochabamba, BoliviaThe current hospital was designed to be built in 3phases over a 6-year period. Since HOH functions on donations, construction advances only when funds become available. With this in mind, the first phase of the 13,000 square foot building was designed and built with the nucleus of hospital services in mind. Because of this, we currently have space for only 5 in-patient beds until we finish the second phase of construction. The second phase of construction will include 6 intensive care beds, 6 private rooms and 16 semi-private rooms along with supportive patient services for a total of 44 beds. The third and final phase of construction is to build an additional 6 surgical suites to compliment the 2 currently completed.  Completion of the hospital will require another .2 million.

However, Hospitals of Hope's work has not been limited to Bolivia.  Over our decade of existence, we have helped establish or run clinics and hospitals in twenty-four countries and sent million in supplies worldwide. We have recently begun work on a project in Liberia, Africa, where we hope to help rebuild the medical infrastructure destroyed by the Liberian civil war.

Liberia_pics1_255.jpgAfter a devastating fourteen-year civil war, Liberia is finally beginning to rebuild.  But this task will not be easy.  With 250,000 killed and 1.3 million displaced, Liberia’s population has suffered untold amounts, and, for many, this suffering continues.  80% of Liberians live below the poverty line, and 35% are undernourished.

Medical facilities in Liberia, Africa were ravaged during its civil war, contributing to an ongoing health crisis.  Hospitals of Hope intends to address this issue by building and equipping a trauma unit for the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia, providing medical volunteers, and training hospital staff.

Some may wonder why they should consider supporting an effort that is international.  The answer is that supporting this effort not only fulfills Jesus' commandment to "go into all the world and preach the gospel" but also supports the educational development of both national and international students of medical professions. To date more than 1500 volunteers from 6 countries have traveled to Bolivia to serve alongside of Hospitals of Hope.  Over the years, Hospitals of Hope has developed partnerships with universities including Yale, Salus, and Wichita State to send students to Bolivia for training.  This is an opportunity for HOH to expose young professionals to the mission field and influence their potential future serving Christ, in addition to providing vital services to those in need.
