Michael Joseph Wawrzewski III

Michael Wawrzewski is a native of Garnett, Kansas. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from

Wichita State University, where he completed the Physician Assistant program in 1995. At the

age of 28, Michael founded Hospitals of Hope in 1998 after taking multiple short-term mission

trips to medically undeveloped countries which then led him to build a 32 bed Level II hospital

in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

From the many lessons learned working in Bolivia, Michael formed Clinic In A Can, LLC,

which is a manufacturer of turn-key, solar powered, modular medical facilities within shipping

containers. As the Bible says, the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few, so this applies to

the medical needs worldwide. Understanding the limited resources both in time and money, the

idea of building medical facilities within shipping containers was just the right match. Now that

technology has advanced to allow ultrasound, chemistry and even x-ray machines to be handheld

point of care devices, the limited space within a shipping container now have been transformed

into advanced life-saving spaces. Adding solar power now make it possible to provide essential

medical care anywhere in the world regardless of the infrastructure.

Michael has many years of experience providing medical care to developing countries. As a true

visionary willing to make his ideas a reality, Michael was the recipient of the 2005 American

Academy of Physician Assistants Humanitarian of the Year award and the 2008 Frist

Humanitarian Award from HCA (Hospital Corporation of America). In addition to his

international humanitarian work, Michael continued to work full-time as a Physician Assistant

here in Wichita, Kansas at Wesley Medical Center in the Neurocritical Care department until

September of 2022. His twenty-seven years of experience working in the medical field has given

him valuable insights into the most effective use of clinical spaces. These insights have been

implemented in the design and construction of each Clinic In A Can unit. Now he has a little

more balance in his life only working full-time for Clinic In A Can.

Michael is married to Elizabeth and they have two children, Isabella 10 y/o and Sebastian 8 y/o.

who love to travel as a family learning history and meeting new people.
